Can I play MP4 on Windows Media Player? The short answer is no...but there are ways around it, so read on. A codec is a piece of software used to compress or decompress a digital media file, like songs or videos. Various programs such as Windows Media Player, use codecs when they play or create video or audio files. Why do we need codecs? By compressing audio and video files, they take up a lot less space. This means you can store many more files on your computer or mp3 player or CD's. They also are a lot easier and faster to transfer via the internet. Without compression, it's not likely that large audio/video files could be streamed effectively. Although Windows does use an MPEG-4 codec, it uses the .asf file container. Windows Media Player (WMP) does not support the .mp4 file format. You can play MP4 files in WMP if you install DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs. According to Microsoft, DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs include the Ligos LSX-MPEG Player and the EnvivioTV. The problem here is Ligos no longer offers it's player and EnvivioTV isn't available except to it's customers.
